Project Northpole: travelling along the arctic circle

Spitsbergen

Polarbear paradise. This archipelo, also known as Svalbard, consists of three major islands, merely covered with glaciers. First stop in summer 2006.

Iceland

A volcanic island nation in the northern Atlantic Ocean and is about 10% glaciated. Land of geysers and the arctic fox. Planned in early spring 2007.

Qaanaaq

Also known as Thule, located in the northwest of the world's largest national park. About 81% of its surface is covered by ice. Planned as soon as a visa is granted.

Nunavut

Vast area of tundra islands located in the northwest of Canada. Land of the Inuit, caribous and whales. Planned in 2008.

Alaska

The largest and least populated state of the US. Home of millions of lakes and numerous volcanic islands. Planned in 2008.

Chukotka

The northeastern extremity of Asia, in the Russian Far East, seperated from Alaska by the Bering street. Dominated by tundras, with some areas of taiga. Planned in 2009

Norway

Rugged and mountainous nordic country, famous for its fjords, as well as a multitude of islands and islets. Planned somewhere in winter, in order to have a good change observing the northern lights.

The Northpole

No land. Just ice. The end of the project. Hopefully, enough ice is left in 2010.

  • This site contains a description of the restaurants and bars I visited in Brussels during my eight months expat period in 2005. Not particularly arctic, but worthwhile for any foodlover visiting this site.

From the author

Project Northpole describes my plan for travelling along the arctic circle in the next five years. The ultimate goal of this project will be the magnetic northpole itself, but this can wait. There is lots of land to see in the process of getting there and even global warming cannot beat me in this attempt. At least, that is what I hope for
